Clerides and Denktash on the negotiation table

05/02/2003 17:16
Cyprus President Glafcos Clerides and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash met on Wednesday in the framework of the UN talks to solve the Cyprus problem. Denktash, however, refused to discuss the prominent issue of territory.

“Mr. Denktash refused to discuss the issue and said he would have to get instructions from the Turkish Cypriot parliament tomorrow”, said President Clerides’ legal aide and presidential candidate, Alecos Markides.

Mr. Markides said that the Turkish Cypriot leader and his team members were more negative today than in the past.

On the question whether a revised UN peace plan is to be submitted this month on the basis take it or leave it, Mr. Markides said that there is an information, which is particularly alarming.

As the CNA reports, President Clerides and the Greek government are particularly concerned over the possibility of a take it or leave it peace plan, thus, the UN is encouraged not to act so. “It would be a serious political error, if the UN proceeds to this act”, Mr. Markides said.

The meeting between the Cyprus President and the Turkish Cypriot leader took place in the presence of UN envoy Alvaro de Soto and the aides of the two leaders and falls within the framework of the UN peace plan submitted by the Secretary General, Kofi Annan. On his attempt to reach an agreement before the February 28, Mr. Annan may submit a revised peace plan soon.
